Daily Chitas for Mendy

Portrait of Mendy smiling, at home among his seforim
In loving memory of Mendy Vilenkin

Mendy was a chosid through and through — he learned his Chitas every single day, no exceptions. Even in the hospital, he made sure to learn Chitas as much as he possibly could. For him it wasn’t just a routine; it was the air he breathed. Chumash, Tehillim, Tanya — every day, no matter what.

Mendy’s friends are now starting a daily Chitas initiative in his memory, and there is truly nothing that will give Mendy’s neshama a greater aliyah. Every Aliyah of Chumash learnt, every perek of Tehillim said, every perek of Tanya learnt is an eternal zechus for him — a continuation of exactly what he dedicated his life to.

Whether you’ve been learning Chitas for years or this would be your first time, please join. Let’s make sure Mendy’s legacy of daily Chitas lives on through all of us.

ויקח על עצמו בלי נדר לשמור את שלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ״ק מו״ח אדמו״ר והם בחומש תהלים ותניא כידוע״

What Is Chitas?

Chitas (חת״ת) is the daily study cycle treasured in Chabad: three short portions, one for each letter of its name, that together take only a few minutes a day.

חומש

Chumash

The day’s section of the weekly Torah portion, studied with Rashi’s commentary — one aliyah each day, the whole parsha by Shabbos.

תהלים

Tehillim

The day’s chapters of King David’s Psalms, divided so that the entire Book of Tehillim is completed over the course of each month.

תניא

Tanya

The day’s portion of the Alter Rebbe’s Tanya, the foundational work of Chabad Chassidus, completing the sefer over the year.

Many add the day’s Hayom Yom — a brief, luminous thought for the day, compiled by the Rebbe from the teachings of the Rebbe Rayatz. You’ll find it with today’s study links below. This page also includes the day’s Sefer Hamitzvos — the Rambam’s daily mitzvah. It isn’t part of Chitas itself, but it is a cherished addition to the day’s learning, so it has its place here too.
